According to the United Nations (UN):

  • The world population is seven billion people.
  • More than one billion suffer from some form of disability, one in every seven.
  • More than 100 million are children, children with disabilities are four times more likely to be victims of violence.
  • 80% of people with disabilities live in developing countries.
  • 50% of people with disabilities do not have access to health care.

In Mexico

In Mexico, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, obtained from the National Demographic Dynamics Survey 2014, by the year 2014, people with disabilities totaled more than 7 million, which represented 6% of the population.

  • The age structure of the disabled population shows the close relationship of this condition to the process of demographic aging.
  • Almost half of the people with disabilities (47.3%) are elderly adults (60 years and over) and 34.8% are between 30 and 59 years old.
  • According to the National Survey on Discrimination in Mexico 2010, the population with disabilities consider that unemployment is the main problem that people with this condition are facing today in the country, followed by the difficulties they face to be self-sufficient.
